Getting To Know – Layla Oresme

How long have you been modelling?

I’ve been modelling almost 10 years now. Kinda crazy when I think about it, but I never modelled full time so I guess that’s why it doesn’t feel like such a long time. Plus I started when I was really young.

You’re currently freelance. Do you enjoy being independant?

At the moment yes. Well I have a mother agent and we are in the process of agency hunting. This past year, due to everything that was going on, my focus has been mainly on my music and art. Modelling was pretty slow.

Do you find freelance tougher than being signed?

I think being freelance has an upside but I do think it’s a lot harder. Especially when the goal is to make a living out of it. I think it’s always better to work with an agency with an established clientele, rather than doing everything on your own. But, if you have a good social media following, being freelance is probably really good. It’s nice to have a freedom and be your own boss. It’s also tricky when you’re signed to an agency that is not pushing you because then you’re bound by a contract and it can be a waste of time for models. But personally, I’m just too busy, so having a good team around me is important. I do prefer being signed as it just takes a lot of stress away from me and allows me to focus on everything else that goes on in my life.

That’s really interesting to hear your view on that, goes to show there is no right or wrong answer. Modelling isn’t your only talent, Tell us about your other passions?

I’m a music producer, painter, writer and a numerologist/tarot reader. I like to keep myself busy and make the most out of all my abilities. I don’t believe in the idea that a person should stick to only one of their interests. It’s important to explore them all and find a way to somehow unite and combine them together. That’s what makes us unique. There’s always something you can learn from one of your interests and implement it into another area, even if it’s completely seemingly unassociated.

You clearly have many talents and stay really busy, what do you like to do in your spare time?

I don’t actually have much spare time at all lol. I’m always doing something, making music, painting, reading and studying, doing readings etc.

What’s your favourite shoot you have ever done and why?

Every shoot I’ve done with Sander Dekker has been my favourite. He’s an amazing person and a great friend and we always have so much fun shooting together. I’ve known him since the start of my career and he always makes me laugh so much! The theme for our shoots is always go as crazy and weird as possible. How can you go wrong?

What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened on a shoot?

There are so many things lol. I remember on one of my first shoots, I was really young and the hair stylist burnt my cheek with straighteners. I was low key traumatised because she tried to act like nothing happened. I was too shy to say anything. Luckily it didn’t scar. But there were other moments when I would turn up to test shoots with photographers that were really slimy. It would always annoy me because I would always be very professional but that wasn’t always reciprocated. I have learned to have strong boundaries so that no one can take advantage of me or make me feel uncomfortable. Aside from that, the countless shoots in freezing cold and being told to look “more relaxed” when you’re turning purple and can’t feel your limbs. Or when I did a photoshoot in the Californian desert in 45C heat. We were all literally melting and started to feel rather delirious at the end of it. But it was actually a really fun shoot so I can’t consider it “the worst”. I loved running around in the desert.

Ouch, we’re glad you were,’t scarred by the hair straighter. Slimy photographers are a reoccurring theme it seems. Can you see yourself ever not modelling?

I always go through times when I model less and then more, but I do love being in front of the camera so I do think I will be doing this for a very long time still.

Do you have any advice for people trying to get into the industry?

Yes. Number 1 is get comfortable with rejection – you will get a lot of it, sometimes in some really ruthless ways. It will break you if you take it personally. Number 2 is know that if you’re not comfortable doing anything, you don’t have to do it. And 3 is look after your health!!!
