The April Issue Of British Vogue Is An Ode To Joy

Blazoned across the cover of Vogue’s April issue is a word I have been thinking about a lot recently: joy. Given the state of the world, even to write it down feels slightly daring. However, as basic human needs go, in recent times we have all had an insight into the importance of joy, and why it should never be taken for granted.

Of course, when life gets tough, joy can too easily be lost, and life has certainly been tough of late. That said, what I find almost equally worrying, and certainly more insidious, is how in dark days the pursuit of happiness is seen as somehow inappropriate.

I couldn’t disagree more – such perspectives are more than a little shortsighted. For many people, long before this pandemic began, the urge to feel happy and positive – to, as our cover proclaims, “find your joy” – has been an everyday struggle. Given the events of the last 12 months, I hope that we all have a greater appreciation of that, and some increased empathy, too. So many lives are lived under the daily pressures of hardship and discrimination, of stresses both personal and societal, which mean that fighting for happiness is simply a part of existence. Taking pleasure in things large or small (and sometimes very small at the moment) is not a frivolous act. I would agree wholeheartedly with the notion, then, that joy is political.

The collection is four times as sustainable as last year’s

Hearst’s Chloé debut was always going to be a statement of intent from the socially responsible, environmentally conscious designer, but she kicked off her tenure with a real bang. By accelerating a sustainability plan initially proposed for 2025 to 2022, she inadvertently posed the question of why other brands are not doing more to pave the way for a greener future. The autumn/winter 2021 collection, for which Hearst eliminated polyester and viscose in favour of recycled, reused and organic materials, is four times more sustainable than last winter’s line and encompasses two social partnerships with Manos del Uruguay and Sheltersuit. “This is part of the Chloé mission: weaving purpose into business endeavours in a post-pandemic world to help acknowledge and alleviate the hardship of others,” asserted Hearst. “A luxury brand has the duty to do so.”

Gigi Hadid Looks Radiant In Previously Unseen Pregnancy Snaps

Two trends are in glorious tandem in 2021: revelling in nostalgia, and the rise of the “photo dump”. As a Covid-19 world continues to turn, it’s no surprise that we’re taking a moment or two to look back at past pictures that simply make us feel happy. And Gigi Hadid is the latest to join in on the action.

Over the weekend, while baby Khai was taking a nap, the new-gen super used the time to experiment with the “post a picture from this date” function on Instagram Stories. From vintage hauls to visits to Moschino HQ to her pregnancy food cravings, Hadid immersed herself in snaps from days gone by. From August 2020, she shared a photo of herself in baby Khai’s nursery ahead of her daughter’s arrival, and from December, we got to see new parents Gigi and Zayn proudly taking their little one out for a stroll.

When and how did you become a model?

When I was younger all my mothers friends told her that I’ll work as a model when I’m older because of my long legs. My mom always told me about these stories and when I turned 16 I started to read fashion magazines and googled what a model does and what kind of models there are.

I started to search for photographers so I can try it out. I really had fun at my first shooting so I decided to go to different photographers and to apply to different castings. At one of these castings I met a photographer who was fascinated by my face. We worked together and became friends and I asked him a lot of questions how to apply to other castings and some agencies. After I knew how, I applied to different things and also tried to do different shootings to get experience.

Becoming friends with people in the industry is so important. What agency are you with and how long have you been with them?

Right now I’m not with any agency. I am a freelance model.

Tell us the most interesting thing to ever happen on a photoshoot?

It’s not the most interesting thing that happened to me on a photoshoot but it is a memory that makes me happy everytime thinking about it.

I had a shooting and the photographer posted a selfie of us in his story and while we were shooting some magazines contacted him saying they want to have me in their next issue. He told me about it and I was so happy because I’ve never been in magazines before. I was so proud and happy that things are working out.

What’s your favorite shoot you’ve done?

A shooting in the desert. It was a really beautiful place. The sand so even and soft, the place super quiet and the sun shining on my skin. It was definitely a unique view. It was really hot out there but I prefer hot weather over cold weather.

That sounds like genuine perfection! Are there any aspects of the industry that you don’t like?

There are a few things I really don’t like. I don’t like that there are some people in the industry that try to take advantage of models. They try to blackmail or abuse the models to get what they want. This is a big problem.

Another thing is that there are many people who will destroy the confidence of a model by telling them they have to much weight on or aren’t good enough. A lot of models suffer from eating disorders.

It’s shocking that in 2020, this still happens. Hopefully one day this will change. You are one of the most versatile models we’ve come across, do you feel that benefits you when getting work?

Definitely! It gives me the chance to work with different good photographers and be able to give them the mood they want on pictures. It gives me the chance to get to work with different photographers for different magazines or campaigns.

What’s the thing you enjoy most about modeling?

Meeting different people and traveling around the world. I love to meet new people and some of them become good friends.

Traveling is one of the things I do since I’m a kid as my mother and I always live in different countries. I couldn’t imagine a life without traveling.

How long do you wish to be modelling?

I discovered my passion for it after my first photo shooting (with 16) as I noticed how much fun I have being in front of a camera.

What photographer do you want to work with the most and why?

There are a lot of other photographers I want to work with. For example Ellen von Unwerth, Luigi and Iango and a lot of others I really wish to work with one day. I love their photography style and they are inspiring. It’s hard for me to choose only one as there are a lot of good and creative photographers out there.

They are some great choices! Do you have any advice for aspiring models?

Please never do anything you don’t want to do. If you feel uncomfortable with anything, don’t do it! If people tell you ‘you can’t do it’ don’t listen to them and don’t let them try to blackmail you. Always be careful.
